We are here to support you. All survivors of sexual assault in San Francisco can access timely, quality, free medical care related to the assault and information about involving law enforcement.
The Rape Treatment Center / Child and Adolescent Support Advocacy and Resource Center medical providers have specialized training in survivor-centered care.
Our Mission
We provide a safe space for sexual assault survivors to explore options, ask questions, and receive the care and support they need.
What We Do
Our team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners are on call 24/7 to provide care and support to adult survivors of sexual assault and youth survivors of sexual assault and abuse. We also consult with other medical providers seeking information on best treatment practices.
How We Help
Sexual assault can have a devastating impact on people at emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial levels. Our multidisciplinary team works together to support healing and recovery for survivors of recent assault/abuse, and strives to create an environment where survivors feel welcome, safe, listened to and respected. We coordinate with other members of San Francisco’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
Services for Survivors Age 12 and Older: (For 11 and under, see further below)
Medical Evaluation
- Sensitive, respectful, free medical evaluation & care related to the sexual assault that includes: evaluating injuries, providing risk assessment & treatment options for possible pregnancy, and providing risk assessment and treatment options for possible exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
- For survivors 12 years and older, information about possible exposure(s) to HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy is confidential and does not require parental involvement.
- For survivors under 18 years old, we are required to attempt to notify your parent when you are the victim of a sexual assault, unless your parent is the perpetrator of your abuse
Help Reporting to Law Enforcement if You Choose
- For survivors age 12 and older, we can help you make a report to law enforcement if you would like to do so. However, you are not required to report the sexual assault to law enforcement or engage with law enforcement in any way unless you want to.
- As health care workers, we are required to make a mandated report to law enforcement when we have knowledge of a sexual assault or sexual abuse, but this does not require your involvement in any way unless you elect to engage with law enforcement, as explained above.
Forensic Examinations
- We can provide you with a forensic examination to collect evidence that may be used as part of a law enforcement investigation and/or for criminal prosecution if you choose to pursue those. During a forensic evidence examination, physical and photographic evidence may be collected. This may increase the opportunity for successful investigation and prosecution of the sexual assault.
- You may request forensic evidence collection and testing without reporting to law enforcement and decide later if you would like to participate in the criminal justice process.

Medical Evaluation
The Child and Adolescent Support Advocacy and Resource Center (CASARC) provides specialized services for children and families when there is an allegation or suspicion of sexual abuse. We provide child-friendly, free medical evaluation & care related to the sexual abuse that includes: treating injuries, providing risk assessment & options for treating possible exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Our team specializes in minimizing trauma to the child and we find that medical exams by a specialized sexual abuse examiner can be a highly positive experience for children and one which contributes not only to their physical well-being, but to their mental health wellness as well.
Forensic Evaluation
We can provide your child with a forensic examination to collect evidence that may be used as part of a law enforcement and/or child welfare investigation as well as for criminal prosecution. During a forensic evidence examination, physical and photographic evidence may be collected. This may increase the opportunity for successful investigation and prosecution of the sexual abuse/assault.
Consent for Medical/Forensic Evaluation
Only a non-offending parent or legal guardian may provide consent for medical or forensic evaluation. CASARC may also perform these exams without parent or legal guardian consent with a search warrant or exigent request from law enforcement or child welfare department.
Mandated Reporting
As health care workers, we are required to make a mandated report to law enforcement when we have knowledge of a sexual assault or sexual abuse of a child.

- Survivors of recent sexual assault (generally within 5 days) can go to the Emergency Department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where they will be seen by an RTC/CASARC provider. Services are offered 24/7.

CASARC (ages 17 and under)

- Survivors of recent sexual assault/abuse (generally within 5 days) can go to the Emergency Department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where they will be seen by a RTC/CASARC provider. Services are offered 24/7.

- Referrals for Multidisciplinary Forensic Interviews (MDIs) are accepted from Law Enforcement and CPS. As a part of the San Francisco Child Advocacy Center, CASARC coordinates MDIs for children undergoing an investigation for suspected abuse or severe neglect. Interviews are conducted by specialists trained in trauma-informed, child-focused, forensically sound interviewing.
