Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Trauma Recovery and Rape Treatment Center to reach out to members of our community who have suffered from trauma, violence, and loss. We are dedicated to promoting healing by providing respectful, compassionate, and effective mental health and medical services.
The Trauma Recovery Center (TRC/RTC) opened in August of 2001 with a goal of providing supportive mental health and case management services to survivors of interpersonal violence. Types of trauma treated include domestic violence, sexual assaults and other physical assaults, criminal motor vehicle accidents, gang-related violence, and people who have lost a loved one to homicide. The TRC acknowledges that trauma can have a devastating impact on people at an emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial level, and our staff are dedicated to helping people heal from violence at all of these levels.
In response to the September 11th terrorist attacks and at the request of the Victim Compensation Program, TRC clinicians have conducted monthly support groups for family members and survivors of 9/11, convening 32 day-long meetings in Northern and Southern California attended by more the 200 individuals.
Our treatment model is receiving local and national recognition. The San Francisco District Attorney's offices awarded the TRC an Honoring Those Who Care Award for its work with crime victims. The TRC received the prestigious National Association of Public Hospitals 2004 National Safety Net Award for Patient Services." The TRC is only one of two programs in the country to receive this award.
If you have been a victim of sexual assault, you may be able to bo be treated with a medication that my prevent HIV infection. However, this medication must be started within 72 hours of the assault. For more information go to SFGH/ED or call TRC/RTC AT 415-437-3000.
Medical services for clients who have been sexually assaulted are provided at San Francisco General Hospital, Emergency Department (SFGH ED) by a nurse practitioner of physician assistant forensic specialist from TRC/RTC. They are available 24/7 and will respond to the emergency department within 30 minutes of client's arrival.
